|catalog|: The First Contemporary Art Fair by the Association of Galleries (AGA)

Paulina Firstova Maria Glotova
From December 15 to 17, 2023, the Association of Galleries (AGA) will hold the first fair of contemporary art |catalog| in Moscow, with the participation of 30 galleries. The event will take place at the historic typography of Ivan Sytin on Pyatnitskaya Street.

|catalog| aims to become an annual event, covering not only Moscow but also other cities in Russia. The organizers promise to take into account the local characteristics and context of each venue.
One of the distinguishing features of the fair is its exhibition format, which allows for the simultaneous display of works by both recognized masters and new talents. Each gallery must present at least one young artist under the age of 30. Visitors to the fair will have the opportunity to encounter the works of art giants such as Erik Bulatov, Alexey Luka, Vladimir Dubossarsky, as well as discover the works of emerging artists, for example, from the open studios of Winzavod.

It is important to note that all stands are of the same size, and the location is determined by drawing lots, so a very young gallery can be seen at the beginning, and a gallery with many years of experience — at the end. There is no strict curatorial selection of artists at the fair; the interaction scheme is as follows: the fair selects galleries, and galleries, in turn, select artists, without coordinating each candidacy with the organizers in advance (the fair trusts the taste of each gallery owner who has passed the selection). Galleries are not limited in the number of selected artists.

This year, mainly members of the AGA participated in the fair, with a few exceptions. In future projects, it is planned to involve a larger number of galleries not included in the association, and the prices for stands will range from 250,000 rubles (for AGA members) to 300,000 rubles (for other participants).

In addition to the Association of Galleries (AGA), the organizers include gallery owners Dmitry Khankin, Alexander Sharov, and Alina Kryukova, as well as the founder of the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art, Sofia Trotsenko. The initiative is supported by the publishers of the conceptual project on art and style Black Square — Andrey Severilov and Valery Nosov.

|catalog| provides an opportunity for a wide audience to start collecting works of art. Stand prices start at 10,000 rubles.

Special attention deserves the lecture program scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

The main goal of the Association of Galleries (AGA) at this event is to ensure transparency of the art market and increase the level of understanding of its functioning. The next stage of work is planned to analyze world practices of price formation and develop clear criteria based on which the cost of works of art is determined.

An active discussion on pricing is expected on Saturday, in which prominent experts will take part, including Irina Stepanova, head of Sotheby's Russia and the CIS; Daria Parfenova, former representative of Christie's in Russia; Sergey Popov, experienced gallerist and art historian.

On Sunday, the agenda includes discussions on the development of aesthetics in the surrounding environment, including architecture, design, and household aspects. Among the speakers will be Daria Belyakova, founder of A-HOUSE, and prominent architects who will discuss the influence of the aesthetics of cities, neighborhoods, and residential complexes on the formation of cultural preferences of different generations. The information partner is WoL and chambers located on Leo Tolstoy Street, together with Maya Santimirova, will talk about the culture of everyday life and the role of design in integrating art into the living environment.
